YouthQuest Highlights: August 2022

Mutual Respect

Kicking off the school year, YouthQuest sites at Flint Community Schools started working on social contracts between the staff and students. YouthQuest staff solicited ideas from students on what they would want in the contract and how they would like program to go. Then, they combined those ideas with their own expectations for program and developed contracts for staff and students to sign. These contracts intend to get everyone who is part of the program on the same page to start the school year off strong. Some of the points on the contracts may include respecting everyone and showing up with a positive attitude.

Extra Extra! Extravaganza!

At International Academy of Flint, students and their families participated in a Back-to-School Extravaganza. The event featured vendors, a bounce house, caricature drawings, a balloon artist and community resources. YouthQuest hosted a community resource booth along with other booths including Crim Fitness Foundation nutrition and mindfulness. Participants enjoyed a slice of pizza and were able to gather information from community resources.

Staying Alive

YouthQuest staff took CPR training throughout the month of August. During the training, staff learned about bloodborne pathogens, adult and pediatric first aid, CPR and the use of AED. Trainees learned when checking an injured person to use Check, Call and Care.

  • Check the scene to make sure it’s safe and check responsiveness and check to see if the person is breathing;
  • Have someone call 911 and get the AED; and
  • Begin five cycles of CPR.

They also learned how to respond to other emergencies such as someone having a heart attack, choking, asthma attack, stroke, anaphylaxis, seizure and anxiety.

Around the World

Preparing for the school year, students and staff at Pierce Elementary brainstormed a theme for this year’s clubs and came up with “around the world.” To match that theme, students are preparing to participate in a variety of clubs including Lego Club, Culture Club and Travel Club. To tie in the theme, students will learn about various countries in these clubs. For example, in Travel Club, students will be picking places around the world and will learn about various foods in those cultures.

YouthQuest is made possible through the generous support of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and 21st Century Community Learning Centers.
