COOKING AND EATING HEALTHY
The Cookout Club at International Academy of Flint Elementary is learning about healthy eating and practicing skills that students can use at home. Recently, the students hosted a pancake breakfast, where they made blueberry and raspberry pancakes. Other recent recipes have included a gyro – something that few students had tried before – and individual pizzas.
CHECKS AND BALANCES
The Billionaires Club at Dye Elementary accepts only YouthQuest Dollars at its on-site store. The currency is awarded based on good behavior, homework and more. Students have the option to spend their “money” on small items or save up for something more expensive. The youth use checkbooks – donated by a local parent – to help them with their budgeting and saving decisions.
CONSERVATION OF THE WORLD’S SEA LIFE
On April 11, students at Southwestern Academy visited the SEA LIFE Michigan, an aquarium that cares for more than 5,000 marine and fresh-water creatures in Auburn Hills. During their visit, they learned how their actions on land can affect the animals living in the ocean. They also learned about the important roles different fish, turtles and mammals play in the ocean’s ecosystem.
BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT IN HONOR OF EARTH DAY
Students at Durant-Tuuri-Mott are developing a plan to beautify the front of their school. While the project is still in the planning process and would require school approval, the students would like to plant new bushes and flowers, and lay down fresh mulch in the front of the elementary school. The project is a belated Earth Day celebration for younger students who were not able to participate in the Earth Day Rally on April 19.
YouthQuest is made possible through the generous support of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and 21st Century Community Learning Centers.
