School may be out; however, students don’t have to fall into vacation boredom just yet. There are plenty of places to visit to fill the long days and keep children learning and exploring in the area.
“Summer break offers the perfect opportunity for families to explore Flint and Genesee County,” says Rhetta Hunyady, vice president of Education & Training at the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce. “We are lucky to have so many organizations that provide fun and educational experiences for local youth.”
Looking for places to take your child this summer? Here are places to have fun for the whole family:
- The Flint Children’s Museum is the perfect place for family fun. With exhibits featuring hands-on activities, children can explore and learn in a fun and exciting environment.
- Exploring the Flint Farmers’ Market is a great summer family experience. There are more than 50 vendors inside the market and an additional 30 vendors in the outdoor pavilion. For kids, the Flint Children’s Museum booth features a silo playscape and climbing wall.
- The Flint Public Library is more than just a place to borrow books. Children can participate in Lunch on the Lawn Storytime and meet various animals with For-Mar Comes to the Library.
- Genesee County is home to the largest county parks system in the state. Genesee County Parks are a great place for youth to explore and learn about the great outdoors.
- For-Mar Nature Preserve & Arboretum has plenty of summer programming. Students can learn about insects, become explorers and attend story time in a treehouse.
- For star lovers, Longway Planetarium is the perfect place to get away from the summer heat. It has a host of shows including The Life of Trees, Accidental Astronauts and Skies over Michigan.
- The Sloan Museum is a trove of Flint history. This year, Sloan Museum is expanding their operation to Courtland Center Mall with Dinosaurs Unearthed. Discover animatronic dinosaurs, giant skeletons and fossil casts.
- Michigan’s second largest fine arts museum, the Flint Institute of Arts, is a great place to take a budding creative. And every Saturday, admission to the museum is free thanks to a sponsorship from Huntington Bank.

This one-day event, sponsored by the Flint & Genesee Convention & Visitors Bureau and MTA, offers residents and non-residents the opportunity to come out and experience what the community has to offer – all for just $1.
