- “Women of a New Tribe” – This exhibition presents the spiritual and physical beauty of selected African American women in the Flint community photographed by artist Jerry Taliaferro. Part of a larger project that has traveled across the United States, 110 Flint area women were nominated and 50 participants were drawn from the pool at the 2016 Community Dialogue event. In the summer of 2016, Taliaferro traveled to Flint to photograph each woman and learn her story. According to Taliaferro, his primary motivation in this project was “to reveal the beauty and souls of black women.” A fully illustrated catalogue accompanies this exhibition.
- “Reaction: The Art of Social Commentary” – This exhibition, drawn from the FIA’s permanent collection, explores how artists have addressed political, social and civil rights issues through art, from World War I to the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s. The beginning of the 20th century was marked with war and economic depression, and in response artists began to express their discontent with the social and political environment that surrounded them. This exhibit features graphic works by Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Elizabeth Catlett, Ben Shahn, George Grosz, Mario Zapata Vasquez and more.
- “Art of Jade” – Throughout history, jade has had profound cultural implications in different regions of the world. A wide variety of items, including tools, figurines and jewelry reflected the strong cosmological and symbolic associations the culture had with this luminous, hard stone. This exhibit includes objects from China that range from the Neolithic period (8,000-2,000 BCE) to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) and from Mesoamerican cultures dating back as early as 1800 BCE. The exhibit explores the history of these “jade cultures” as well as the functional, stylistic and technical developments of jade as an artist medium throughout time.
- “Civitas” – Jacek Jerzy Kolasinski’s installations are rooted in the experience of growing up in two worlds: the “Old World” of Krakow, Poland, and the “New World” of the United States. The search for identity in the vortex of cultural displacement surfaces often in Kolasinski’s work. Civitas is a small-scale re-creation of a medieval town destroyed by fire. It serves as a parable describing the devaluation of various social institutions like religion and family. The dilapidated buildings are emblematic of urban decline. The projected images are captured, transmitted, and transformed by a small video camera situated in the center of the installation. This imagery gives the impression of an anonymous explorer documenting the ruins in the heart of an unnamed village devastated by some unknown disaster.
