“The mission of our Vehicle City Sports Committee is to promote Flint and Genesee County as a venue for hosting youth and amateur sporting events. The success of our annual Gridiron Classic led us to soccer, which is increasing in popularity across the country. We are excited to have three high school soccer games scheduled, along with our pre-professional women’s team, Flint City AFC,” said Judge Duncan Beagle, chair of the Vehicle City Sports Committee
“We are excited to support this amazing event here in Flint & Genesee. Flint and Genesee County have such a rich sports history and culture, and we are always working to foster and showcase that,” says Amari Steward, executive director of Explore Flint & Genesee.
“We are very excited to have a great lineup of high school matches followed by the Flint City AFC match. We look forward to hosting a great celebration of girls and women’s soccer at Flint’s Historic Atwood Stadium,” said Tom Saxton, Vehicle City Soccer Classic Committee member
“We are thrilled to host our women’s opening night as a part of this wonderful event showcasing elite female athletes right here in Genesee County. Flint City AFC will feature some great local talent this season including Reece Canada, Elle Phillips, Natalie Vance, Grace Cameron, and Kensey Teffner. We cannot wait to welcome the entire community back to iconic Atwood Stadium this summer,” says Costa Papista, president of the Flint City AFC
“The annual Vehicle City Classic is a great way for our community, especially family and youth players, to see high-level high school soccer right here at Atwood Stadium. With the invitation of ALL Michigan Collegiate coaches invited to attend, it’s an excellent opportunity for our local and talented players to be seen without traveling out of state to a showcase. We are so excited for this event and our partnership with the Flint City AFC match-up that evening!” says Shannon White, Vehicle City Soccer Classic Committee member
“I grew up playing soccer in Flint—at Atwood Stadium, Broome Park, Whaley Park; and it played a huge role in my life. I’m excited to be a part of this event that highlights all the great talent we still have in this area,” says Rob Nuckolls, head coach at Davison High School.
“The rich history of Atwood Stadium in Flint goes back a long way from baseball to Thanksgiving Day football games. The addition of the Vehicle City Classic a few years back is a great opportunity to showcase the soccer talent in the Flint area and around the state. We’re excited to be a part of this tradition,” says Greg Kehler, head coach at Grand Blanc High School.
“Powers Catholic is excited to be a part of the Vehicle City Soccer Classic once again. The event has grown in quality on both the boys’ and girls’ sides recently. The venue of Atwood Stadium provides an amazing environment for both players and fans. This will be a great day and a great opportunity for local student-athletes to showcase their talents,” says Paul Stravato, head coach at Powers Catholic High School.
