Six local high school teams to play at Kettering University’s historic Atwood Stadium ahead of Bucks friendly
(FLINT, Mich. Aug. 7, 2024) On Saturday, Aug. 17, soccer fans can watch some of the best in area high school soccer compete during the second annual Flint & Genesee Vehicle City Soccer Classic. The event – which will begin at noon at Kettering University’s historic Atwood Stadium in Flint – will be followed by a Flint City Bucks exhibition game vs Inter Detroit FC.
“With the Flint City Bucks and several outstanding high school teams, Flint & Genesee is brimming with soccer talent,” says Judge Duncan Beagle, president of the Flint & Genesee Vehicle City Sports Committee. “This is a real strength of our sports community, and we want to showcase that.”
The games will begin with matchups starting at noon. Tickets are $5 at the gate and are also available for purchase online at GOFan.co until 4:30 p.m. the day of the event. Parking at the stadium is $5. The matchup schedule includes:
- 12 p.m. – Davison High School vs. Linden High School
- 2 p.m. – Elk Rapids High School vs. Powers Catholic High School
- 4 p.m. – Okemos High School vs. Grand Blanc High School
“Anytime we can shine a positive light on Flint, play at a historic stadium, and promote quality soccer – both at a high school and professional level – I’m all in on that,” said Kevin Fiebernitz, member of the Flint & Genesee Vehicle City Sports Committee.
Fiebernitz, who also serves as coach of the Linden High School soccer team, noted that his players are looking forward to the competition: “We’ve come down to Atwood Stadium in past years to play Powers Catholic, and that’s always a great experience. Our students love the stadium atmosphere.”
After the high school matchups, the Flint City Bucks, the city’s USL League Two team, will compete against Inter Detroit FC in an exhibition game starting at 7:30 p.m. The game will also include a kids zone, food trucks and post-game fireworks display.
“We’re excited to partner once again with the Flint & Genesee Vehicle Sports Committee on this event,” said Costa Papista, president of the Flint City Bucks. “This is a great opportunity to support and engage with some of our region’s most talented young athletes. We invite the entire community to join us in cheering on the teams and celebrating their skills.”
High school tickets will be valid for Bucks admission as well. Standalone tickets for the Bucks game cost $12 for adults and $7 for kids and are available at www.flintcitybucks.com; all Bucks season ticket holders get complimentary admission to the Bucks game.
