Making yourself marketable to prospective employers is key to getting the job of your dreams, according to Betty Gilcreast, Training Coordinator for Career Edge and TeenQuest.
“Knowing the difference between your skills and experience is important because companies want to know what you bring to the table,” Gilcreast says. “Being a team player, a problem solver and a person who takes initiative is what these employers are looking for.”
According to Gilcreast, it’s important to have a solid answer prepared for the question that many employers ask first: “Tell me about yourself.” Job seekers should be able to answer the question by highlighting skills that relate to the job opening and can be backed up by previous work or life experience.
For example, if you like to play basketball, be prepared to talk about how the experience has helped develop your teamworking skills.
Job seekers can put their interview skills to the test during the Flint & Genesee Job & Resource Fair at Baker College on Aug. 23. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with more than 25 employers on-site.
Confirmed employers include AFLAC, Belle Tire, Flint Area Schools Employees Credit Union, Flint & Genesee YouthQuest, Kroger, METS – Michigan Educational Transportation Services, Niles Plant Services LLC, Qualified Staffing, and others.
There will also be additional employment resources available to job seekers.
Interested in attending? Remember to bring several copies of your resume, dress professionally and have a positive attitude, says Gilcreast.
