Did you know that November is National Scholarship Month? The month aims to build awareness of scholarships and celebrate the common goal of getting students to and through college.
There is a significant need for scholarships to help students attend school. According to Think Impact, a free source for education and career-related statistics, in 2020, 58 percent of families used scholarships to help pay for college.
Luckily, in Flint and Genesee County, there are several different scholarships available to students based on merit, interest and need. Many scholarships are housed at the Community Foundation of Greater Flint and, with one application, area students can find out what they are eligible for. The application will be open to students starting in December.
Some scholarships include:
Bob Emerson Scholarship Fund
To be awarded to residents of Genesee County who are attending an institution of post-secondary education, maintaining a 3.0 GPA and who are active in civic and/or political community affairs.
Leslie G. Ames Fund
To be awarded to graduating seniors of any high school in Genesee County with at least at 3.0 GPA.
J.B. Cook and George Carpenter Scholarship Fund

Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5, an interest in becoming an entrepreneur, 40 hours of volunteer service experience in Genesee County, and leadership roles in school or out-of-school settings. Financial needs must be established.
Keith Alton Burden Memorial Fund

Samuel and Leah Bryer Scholarship Fund

Another program available to graduating seniors who live and attend school in the city of Flint is the Flint Promise Scholarship Program. By covering the cost of tuition after federal grants and other scholarships have been applied, Flint Promise allows eligible students to attend participating colleges at little to no cost.
