SYI Applications Due March 29

Applications are being accepted for the Summer Youth Initiative (SYI) Job Fair which will be held April 27. During the event, TeenQuest graduates in grades 9-12  are eligible to interview with dozens of employers looking to fill summer jobs.

“We are excited for this year’s SYI Job Fair,” says James Avery, director of Education & Training at the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce. “Gaining a summer job is an important way for students to gain self-confidence and self-awareness.”

According to Avery, SYI offers students the chance to gain more than just a summer job. Students also gain experience, learn valuable social skills and make connections that could one day help them get their dream job.

In addition to the training and work experiences, students give back to their community through the SYI Volunteer day. Last year, SYI participants gathered to help clean up neighborhoods around the city of Flint.

“Beyond their summer job, students are given an opportunity to serve their community,” says Avery. “SYI gives students a unique experience that helps shape them into young men and women.”

Last year, around 300 students participated in SYI and worked with local employers including the Flint Public Library, the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan and Genesee County Parks & Recreation Department.

Applications must be completed on or before March 29 for students to be eligible for the job fair. For more information and to complete an application, visit flintandgenesee.org/SYI.

TeenQuest and Summer Youth Initiative are made possible through the generous support of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.
