Jump into Spring with These Activities

Spring has sprung and as the weather begins to warm up, now is the time to plan some fun outdoor spring activities. With the largest county parks system in the state and miles of biking, walking and water trails, there is always something to do.

Here are ways you can enjoy the warm weather:

Hiking

Genesee County is home to over 11,000 acres of parks. With 10 trails located around the county, there are plenty of places to get out and explore this spring.

At For-Mar Nature Preserve & Arboretum in Burton, there are numerous trails including a 5k route that bends around Kearsley Creek.

Buell Lake County Park in Clio was named the most beautiful place in Genesee County in 2018 and features a one-mile walking trail.

Find a trail near you on the Genesee County Parks website.

Kayaking and Canoeing

There are plenty of places to get on the water in Flint & Genesee.

The Flint River is a 73-mile water trail that begins at Mott Lake and has over 20 access sites. This summer, Paddlers’ Landing in the Mott Park Recreation Area will open, providing a safe, fully accessible community access point to the Flint River.

The Shiawassee River in southern Genesee County travels from Holly to Chesaning with access points for Genesee County paddlers in Fenton and Linden. In Linden, EZ Kayak Rental offers kayak and canoe rentals opening in late April with special accommodations for those who want to get out on the river beforehand.

Biking

It is easy to ride downtown Flint with the Flint Bike Share. With nine locations to rent or return bikes, citizens and visitors can bike around the city or along the Flint River trail with hourly rentals.

The Flushing Riverview Trail is a 1.4-mile non-motorized path that starts at the Main Street Bridge and runs along the Flint River and is great for cycling.

Garden Tours

April showers will bring spring flowers. See those flowers on a garden tour.

Applewood Estates in Flint has beautiful gardens throughout their ground available for tours starting in May.

In Fenton, Heavenly Scent Herb Garden has various gardens to explore that will give you inspiration for your own garden.
