Jennifer Sear had a robust career in health care when she and her husband decided to open a business of their own. So, they investigated various franchises until they landed on one that aligned with their goals and values of helping people. At first, they were just looking to be franchise owners, but plans changed once they found their fit.
“As I got more into it, I realized I didn’t just want to own it but run and operate it,” says Sear. “I realized I could run the clinic and make it the best it can be to help the people in our community.”
With that, Sear quit her full-time job and started to dedicate her time to opening this new location. And early March, Fyzical Therapy & Balance Center opened in Flint.
Fyzical focuses on balance, helping people with dizziness and vertigo. The main goal of the facility is to prevent people from falling. Currently, Sear has a full team ready to go and is excited to start.
“Physical therapists are hard to find,” says Sear. “But I found one who is a Navy veteran and works with patients with Parkinson’s, which is great.”
Although she is excited to start serving Genesee County, it’s been a long road for Sear.
“Just getting construction started took a long time,” says Sear. “I thought we’d be open in October, but getting through the permitting process was a huge deal, especially having to wait. But I am proud of how far we’ve come.”
After opening her location in Flint, Sear plans to expand Fyzical to Fenton and Grand Blanc.
Why did you decide to open in Flint?
Working at McLaren and Hurley, I knew there was a big need for something like this. I have seen the devastation that happens when someone falls. A lot of people don’t recover, so I thought it was important to have something to help prevent that.
How would you describe the area to an outsider?
I love Flint and Genesee County. It’s been nice to see Flint come back and start really remaking themselves. You can see the downtown area thrive with new businesses. Seeing the community come together in the area is an amazing thing. There is a strong community in Flint & Genesee.
What is your business philosophy?
I want to build a culture where everyone loves coming to work and people love coming to treatment.
Why did you decide to join the Flint & Genesee Chamber?
I’m on the board of Ele’s Place, which helps children in the area. Someone there said, “Have you checked out the (Flint & Genesee) Chamber?” I thought it was amazing and loved it! Our first meeting was in December, and everyone was dressed up in their sweaters and it was fun.
What advice would you offer other people looking to open a business?
Have patience – lots of patience – and plan for extra time and delays.
