Dr. Bobby Mukkamala

Dr. Bobby Mukkamala, a nationally renowned otolaryngologist in private practice in Flint, has been elected to the board of trustees of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, which is headquartered in the city. Mukkamala will begin serving on the board on Jan. 1, 2022.

“I have watched our city’s struggles and our successes, and I have always been thankful for the legacy and vision of Charles Stewart Mott and the Mott Foundation,” said Mukkamala. “Our trajectory as a community would be much different without Mott support. I am humbled and honored to be in discussions about the future of our city, our country and our world with my fellow trustees and Mott staff. Three McLaren Flint nurses are among the first to take advantage of a continued partnership between McLaren Health Care and Grand Valley State University (GVSU). The Nursing Workforce Diversity (NWD) grant allows GVSU to fund educational opportunities for nurses from disadvantaged backgrounds and underrepresented minority groups. Through the funded provided from the grant, McLaren nurses will have the majority of their tuition costs covered to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), and/or Doctor of Nursing Practice as a Health Systems Leader at GVSU’s Kirkhof College of Nursing between the 2021 and 2024 academic years.

“This is a great opportunity for McLaren nurses from diverse backgrounds to continue their education and advance their careers within our organization,” said Lisa Zajac, director of Clinical Informatics at McLaren Health Care. “The bachelor’s degree program is online with some in-person practicum experiences. The master’s and doctoral programs are hybrid, so the students will go to Grand Valley once a month while continuing the rest of their education online. Their practicum experiences are in-person within the McLaren organization.”

 

Dee Cramer, a full service HVAC/Sheet Metal Construction & Service firm, is listed among the top 10 in the U.S. for Top Specialty Subcontractors for sheet metal in 2021 published by ENR (Engineering News-Record) Magazine, a construction industry publication. Dee Cramer came in at No. 9 in the magazine’s annual listing.

 

Bishop International Airport is growing and looking for people to grow with it. Several airport tenants need to fill nearly 100 positions combined and will be meeting with job applicants during a career fair on Dec. 14. The jobs range from customer service agents, aircraft fuelers, cooks, cashiers and more. The pay is competitive and some jobs include airline benefits for the employee and immediate family members.

“We are coming out of the pandemic strong. Our route map is growing, we’re adding the Allegiant Base operation in 2022 and we are anticipating continued growth,” said Bishop Airport CEO Nino Sapone. “We want to help our tenants prepare for the growth and having a strong workforce is crucial for long-term success.”

The career fair is from 3-7 p.m. on the second floor of the terminal. Airport tenants will set up in the cafeteria area, just to the left of the escalators. Job applicants are encouraged to come with a resume and be prepared for interviews, as some employers are prepared to hire on the spot.

No pre-registration is necessary and parking will be free to job applicants. Members from the Flint & Genesee Education & Talent team will also be on hand to offer resume building advice. Laptops and computers will be available to review resumes and print revisions of current resumes.

 

The University of Michigan-Flint‘s EDA University Center for Community & Economic Development has received a $35,000 grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) and additional support from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation to work with community partners to develop a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) Plan for the three-county region encompassing Genesee, Lapeer, and Shiawassee counties.

The CEDS contributes to effective economic development in America’s communities and regions through a locally-based, regionally-driven economic development planning process. The funding follows the recent announcement of the EDA University Center’s five-year grant award from the EDA. 

The EDA University Center will work alongside a CEDS Steering Committee and a diverse group of stakeholders to develop the plan. The first step will be creating the committee, which will be composed of economic development organizations, industry, government, residents, educational institutions, health care entities, and community organizations from each county.

 

The City of Flint received a two-year, $1-million grant funded by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) as part of the Community Navigator Pilot Program for targeted outreach to small businesses in underserved communities.

“The City of Flint is home to a variety of entrepreneurs that have chosen to grow their businesses in this amazing city,” said Mayor Sheldon Neeley. “This grant will allow us to continue the much needed work in the area of economic development.”

The goal of the Community Navigator Pilot Program is to connect with a variety of entrepreneurial industries by providing assistance during economic recovery that includes: financial assistance and access to capital; contracting and procurement; marketing, operations, business development, and exporting; and industry-specific training. The Community Navigator Pilot Program will be led by the City of Flint in partnership with the following organizations: 100k Ideas; Best Practices Consulting, LLC; Factory Two; Flint Development Center; Friends of Berston Field House; Latinx Technology and Community Center; The University of Michigan-Flint; and XLerateHealth.

The Michigan State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) announced on NOv. 9 that the city of Linden has been accepted to the Certified Local Government (CLG) program, following confirmation from the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.

“We are pleased to welcome the city of Linden to the CLG program,” said State Historic Preservation Officer Mark A. Rodman. “Linden designated its first historic district in 1975, and entry into the CLG program demonstrates the city’s continued commitment to historic preservation. We look forward to working with the city to further its preservation goals.”

The Certified Local Government program is a partnership among local, state, and national governments focused on promoting historic preservation at the local level. The National Park Service administers the program in coordination with the State Historic Preservation Office. Certification makes the city of Linden eligible for specialized technical assistance and programming from the SHPO. News release
