3 Ways to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Genesee County

It’s Cinco de Mayo – a day that commemorates the Mexican army’s victory at the Battle of Puebla during the French-Mexican War in 1862.

Today, the holiday is recognized in the United States as a day to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage.

For instance, in Genesee County, you might:

  1. Watch Mexican folklorico dancers perform with Culturas del Sol, a Flint-based cultural organization for youth. The dancers are set to take the stage at Poco Loco in Burton from noon to 4 p.m. (weather permitting), followed by a performance at Tia Helita’s at 5 p.m.
  2. Enjoy music from El Ballet Folklorico Estudiantil & Mariachi during the First Fridays Food Truck Festival in Grand Blanc this evening. The event will take place from 5:30-9 p.m. in the high school parking lot. For more info, click here.
  3. Check out Cinco Nuevo – Flint’s first annual Cinco de Mayo celebration. The event will kick off at noon on May 6, and will feature tortilla making, Mexican bingo, live music and performances and more. It will take place in the flat lot at Kearsley Street, between Saginaw and Harrison streets, in downtown Flint.
